Environmental & Sustainability Manager

Sphere solutions are currently working with a leading civil engineering sector on the heads of the valleys highways scheme in South Wales, and they have approached us with the urgent requirement of recruiting an Environmental Manager on a permanent basis.

 

The Client:
Our client are a world leader in its sector, with extensive experience accumulated over its 120 years of history. Its activities cover all areas of engineering and construction and it is a benchmark for civil works (roads, railways, airports, hydraulic and marine works, tunnels and bridges).

 

Purpose of Job:

 

The jobholder will lead the environmental management team to mitigate and minimise all environmental impacts across the scheme, reporting directly to the Project Director. They will also engage proactively with the Environmental Liaison Group (ELG) to ensure that the best use is made of the detailed design phase and address all relevant stakeholder concerns while supporting a sustainable construction phase in the project.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure that all design work incorporates all Authority requirements, the 12 Environmental Design Principles, the REAC and the CEMP and associated plans to produce a minimal impact on the environment during construction.
  • Oversee a team of specialists including Ecologists, Archaeologists, Community Liaison, Arborists and Agronomists who will provide specialist advice and carry out audits to make sure that adequate controls are in place across the scheme.
  • Provide proactive, specialist guidance and advice regarding environmental controls, constraints, and legislation specific to the contracted works, ensuring that construction works are planned and constructed to the highest standards of environmental compliance.
  • Responsibility for the delivery, implementation and maintenance of the CEMP, environmental risk and constraints, completion of standard inspection and reporting as well as delivery of site briefings and Toolbox talks.
  • Coordinate the Environmental Liaison Group meetings and attendees including NRW, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, the relevant Local Authorities, CADW, Glamorgan Gwent
  • Archaeological Trust (GGAT) and SWTRA.
  • Organise, coordinate, and manage all pre-commencement ecological/environmental surveys, ensuring the construction programme is not compromised In partnership with Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW), ensure that the required ecological and environmental licences are applied for and obtained from NRW, that associated mitigation and protection applicable to all protected species are in place and maintained.
  • Liaise with the ECoW and report on any subsequent actions or decisions.
  • Update the Emergency Response Plan with environmental risks and review at least every six

months, or dynamically should environmental issues arise.

 

 

Environmental Responsibilities:

 

  • Consider the environment in decision making, including material procurement, energy efficiency, pollution and ecology on site.
  • Be environmentally aware of the consequences of actions; be familiar with relevant project
  • documentation, standards and contractual requirements regarding environmental performance.

 

Specific Safety Responsibilities:

 

  • To take reasonable care for the safety of themselves and of any other person who may be affected by what they do or fail to do at work.
  • To co-operate with their employers or any other persons in the performance of their statutory duties.
  • Not to misuse or interfere with anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare.
  • Have the ability to evaluate safety practices and procedures to recommend methods of improvement.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • BSc (or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Management or related subjects.
  • Chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (ACIEEM) or the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (PIEMA).
  • Experience as an Environmental Advisor on a Construction or Civil Engineering project.
  • Relevant CSCS Card.

 

Skills and Experience:

 

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to discuss complex technical issues.
  • Ability to influence and persuade others to build working relationships with both internal and external customers at all levels.
  • Flexible approach with an ability to adapt to tight and often changing deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritise and organise own workload with a collaborative approach to work.
  • Strong IT knowledge and skills including MS Office.
  • Proven understanding of project management methodologies and procedures.
  • Good understanding of UK legislation and practical control of water pollution, waste management, ecology, soils and air quality.
  • Good understanding of chemistry as you may be involved in sampling and analysing lab samples.
  • Experience of monitoring and management for issues such as air quality, noise and water would be beneficial.
