Sphere Solutions are currently recruiting for a Health & Safety Manager to work for a large, regional civil engineering contractor on a permanent basis.

Our client currently operates in a variety of sectors including waste, public realm, infrastructure, water, coastal defence and airports. They have won £60m worth of work and seem to have an incredibly busy 2024.

They have just finished a £6m regeneration project on Churchill Way in Cardiff and currently working on a £30m coastal defence project which will provide flood protection along the 2.9km of the Cardiff coast using a variety of interventions including rock armour, 19m sheet piles and embankment reinforcement works.

Job Purpose:

To support the implementation of our business strategy and provide advice and guidance on HSQE matters to our people. To monitor the implementation of our policies and processes, investigate incidents and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Role Responsibilities:

• Keep up to date with the latest HSQE requirements including legislation and best practice.
• Provide support to the directors and management teams in all aspects of HSQE setting the highest standards by personal example.
• Ensure site management is aware of and provided with up-to-date HSQE documentation.
• Advise and propose policy and procedure amendments as required to meet the changing needs of the company and continual improvement.
• Represent the company to clients and other external parties including the relevant enforcement agencies.
• Assist in the facilitation of external audits for certification organizations and other bodies.
• Assist with HSQE requirements at the pre-qualification and bid stages.
• Assist in the preparation of risk assessments and method statements with project teams as needed.
• Conduct six weekly reviews and HSQE audits and inspections on sites and for premises in accordance with the audit programme. Feedback findings to improve the management system.
• Investigate accidents and incidents, preparing detailed reports with recommendations as directed by the HSQE operational lead.
• Liaise with insurers in respect of claims and investigations for incidents including motor-related incidents.
• Assist with the preparation of various HSQE awareness briefings, toolbox talks, alerts etc. in line with operational requirements.
• Attend meetings both internal and external to represent the HSQE team, as appropriate.
• Actively promote and support the Right Works programme partaking in joint reviews with divisional directors for the annual awards.

They are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

• Individuals must have at least 5-10 years civil experience
• NEEBOSH general or construction certificate
• IOSH
• Ideally resides locally to the area
• Full UK Driving License
• Demonstrate a track record of overseeing major projects up to £20-£30m
• Computer literate and able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of MS Office
• Undertake onsite inspection and monitoring of health, safety, and welfare.
• Understand our business strategy and your personal contribution to achieving our business

• Be clear on your responsibilities and strive to deliver what is expected, taking time to think, plan, and reflect on progress.
• Actively contribute to improving our business through our Right Works programme.
