Sphere Solutions is seeking a skilled Contracts Manager specialising in Fire-Stopping for a reputable contractor in Cardiff, South Wales. This permanent position offers the chance to join a leading firm in the passive fire industry.

About the Role:

As a Contracts Manager, you will oversee fire-stopping contracts from inception to completion. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • The ability to be able to take a project from initial enquiry to completion.
  • Effectively manage and run a team.
  • Preparation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements for each contract, ensuring operatives sign and records are retained in the contract file, for HSE inspection if ever needed.
  • Liaising directly with sub-contractors/directly employed staff including planning critical dates and organising labour, materials (organising the logistics of delivery/material ordering and transportation of materials to site), plant and accommodation where appropriate, with admin support.
  • Responsible for management of each contract ensuring that each project is delivered smoothly on time and within budget.
  • Contracts Manager to be issued with a budget and timescale for each project and to hit the budget targets.
  • You will be expected to manage more than one contract at once and visit site, providing the office with site reports, carrying out toolbox talks and checking plant maintenance records.
  • Liaise with site managers and customers managing their expectations
  • Preparation of operation and maintenance manual and handover on completion with client.

The Candidate:

  • Previous experience working as a Contracts Manager
  • Thorough Knowledge of relevant legislation, fire-stopping products
  • Ideally experienced in interior finishing and refurbishment
  • Ability to undertake site surveys to scope and select appropriate solutions to the issues presented
  • Understanding of the importance of collating evidence for all completed works using systems such as bolster or site audit pro

Senior Engineer

Cardiff, South Wales

£55k – £65k plus package depending on experience

Sphere Solutions are currently looking for 2 X Site Engineers and 2 X Senior Engineers to work for a large tier-one building contractor on a permanent basis.

Responsible for:

Responsible for initiating and leading tasks and processes, taking responsibility and being accountable, where relevant, for the work and roles of others whilst exercising broad autonomy and judgement within broad parameters in their area of responsibility. Specialist learning involves detailed analysis of a high level of information and knowledge in an area of work or study.

Summary of the role:

To manage all aspects of engineering on a section/project to ensure the works are delivered to meet the client’s expectations generally working within larger teams or self-sufficient on smaller projects

Main Responsibilities:

Engineering

  • Confidently makes decisions based on engineering judgment and with knowledge of the full range of impacts. Anticipates problems and proactively resolves them and delivers work beyond customer expectation
  • Has full knowledge of the Construction Drawings and Contract Specifications and requirements for compliance and accuracy
  • Manage the setting out process including primary and secondary stations Ensure engineering is undertaken accurately and that a robust checking mechanism is in place
  • Allocate Site and Assistant Engineers to specific tasks or sub-sections of work
  • Challenge provided information and the principles behind it and engages with Consultants to manage the development of engineering solutions and designs
  • Takes the lead in resolving engineering and logistical problems and takes a holistic approach to appraise options, considering project-wide impacts and opportunities for improvement
  • Carry out basic research to identify engineering systems from outside personal experience Facilitate the introduction and exploitation of new and advancing technology
  • Examine the technical aspects of Value Engineering and consult with the wider team
  • Evaluate success of completed work and propose improvements
  • When appointed, undertake the duties of the Temporary Works Coordinator, as defined in the company procedures
  • Write proposals and obtain approval of measures for correcting inaccurate/defective work

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Be aware of and understand the requirements of Health Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures and site plans including Minimum Safety Standards and support the implementation of these and conduct all duties in a manner consistent with these.
  • Manage subcontractors and suppliers to construct the works safely, being assertive in stopping unsafe working
  • Ensure that Task Control Sheets have been issued and are being followed
  • Anticipate risks of Environmental damage and formulate prevention strategies
  • Ensure that risk assessments and method statements are being produced/approved and ensure they are being followed throughout the works
  • Monitor and report on health and safety and incident management within the area of responsibility

Project Management

  • Familiar with the project life-cycle and able to contribute effectively at each stage
  • Develop construction methodology
  • Prepare Short Term Programmes for their areas of work
  • Fully aware of the resources required to effectively complete a section of work
  • Manage site activities to ensure works remain on budget and time
  • Manage all engineering activities related to their section of works

Financial Management

  • Provide input into the evaluation of technical proposals during Subcontract procurement
  • Understand the scope of works and attendances included in Subcontract orders, to support the management of subcontractors
  • Manage site reporting such as record sheets, site instructions etc.
  • Review Daywork Sheets and similar records submitted by subcontractors with the commercial team

Your role will involve working as part of an established team, supporting and advising the client as to the requirements and your obligations in the development of the building design as well as ensuring the design process recognises current legislation. You will work closely with a senior design manager at all times.

Candidates will have some design coordination experience having worked with a main contractor or achitectural practice previously. You will also reside within commutable distance of the Cardiff area

  • Contributing to achieving the appropriate commercial result through the provision of accurate financial reporting
  • Managing subcontractor supplier accounts, financially and contractually, in order to secure full entitlements under the contract
  • Understanding fully the customer’s needs and ensure effective relationships are built and maintained by consistently high customer service and onsite delivery Provide support to the site team on contract requirements

  • Ensure compliance with all contractual requirements. Monitor internal expenditure against budget. Maximise efficiency of reporting techniques/systems.
  • Seek opportunities to maximise value and minimise costs in line with company Values
  • Operate the systems that are in place to provide the information necessary to manage the contract
  • Ensure all customers and stakeholders have an exceptional customer service and work to achieving Perfect Delivery on all projects
  • Support and coach other team members’ commercial and contractual awareness
  • Liaise with the customer, customer representatives and other third parties on commercial issues, including agreement of variations, claims and additional payments
  • Financial closure of projects ensuring all costs and value are allocated in correct systems in accordance with financial timetable.

Due to ongoing growth they have approached us with the requirement to recruit a Senior QS from an M&E background.

Based primarily in the Bristol office and working on a range of projects your roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Vetting and negotiation in connection with the proposed sub-contract documentation to achieve the best deal for the company.
  • Production and submission of cash flow forecast (Internal/External).
  • Assist the project contract engineer(s) in the preparation of the sub-sub-contractor enquiry document, collate and prepare sub-sub-contract documents and agree with sub-sub-contractor.
  • Provide advice on suppliers/sub-sub-contractors quotations.
  • Produce monthly WIP/CVR reports to agreed deadlines.
  • Obtain written agreement on suppliers/sub-sub-contractors final accounts, in conjunction with the project contracts engineer.
  • Collate and prepare in agreed format, variation measurement details for submission to the Main Contractor/P.Q.S.
  • Preparation of final account including agreement of variation account.
  • Analysis of the sub-contract tender to prepare format for valuation applications.
  • Co-ordinate fully with all other disciplines/departments.
  • Monitor performance against project cost/value making recommendations and implementing agreed action.
  • Assist in the monitoring of project progress relative to agreed sub-contract programme and if necessary issue of appropriate ‘formal’ notices. Preparation of contractual claims under the main contract and domestic sub-sub-contracts.
  • Attend project support meetings as and when required.

Candidates will come from the following background and with the following skills and experience:

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor gained with a well known M&E Contractor previously (or similar)
  • Residing locally to the Bristol area
  • Good knowledge of standard forms of contract.
  • Ability to negotiate with clients/sub contractors and draft sub contracts.
  • Knowledge of CIS.
  • Ability to produce accurate monthly cost and value reports and outturn financial forecasts.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Our client, a large and very well established Tier 1 Building contractor in Cardiff has approached us with the requirement to recruit either a BIM Coordinator or possibly a BIM Manager on a permanent basis.

Based permanently in their Cardiff office, and working on a range of larger building projects, your roles and repsonsibilities will include:

Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project teams to develop and successfully implement BIM standards, protocols, and workflows.

Assist in the adoption of BIM technologies, tools, and methodologies within the project team, promoting best practices and efficient workflows.

Provide leading Information Management & best practices to ensure ISO19650, Building Safety Act Golden Thread, change control and Filing & Archiving requirements.

Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between multidisciplinary teams, including clients, to enhance coordination and project outcomes.

Provide guidance, training, and technical support to project team members on BIM software, tools, and workflows, ensuring proficiency and adherence to BIM standards.

Chair BIM Workshops to discuss / review compliance with project BIM Requirements compiling minutes and action items from this sessions and follow-up.

Conduct regular quality control assessment reports on BIM models and associated deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and the companies quality assurance protocols.

Generate and maintain accurate documentation, reports, and project records related to BIM coordination activities, milestones, and project deliverables.

Candidates will have relevant experience already gained with a main contractor or consultancy and have the following skills and experience:

Strong proficiency in BIM software (e.g., Revit, Dynamo, Revizto), along with a solid understanding of BIM methodologies, standards (e.g., ISO19650, IFC, COBie), and industry best practices.

Familiarity with clash detection, model management, data extraction, and visualisation techniques.

Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python) and parametric design principles is advantageous but not essential.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.

Strong problem-solving skills and analytical thinking to identify and resolve coordination issues, perform clash detection analyses, and propose innovative solutions.
