Sphere Solutions are currently recruting for a Design Manager to work for a large, reputable civil engineering contractor on a permanent contract. It’s working for our clients Wales & Energy Division.

Our client currently operate in a variety of sectors including waste, public realm, infrastructure, water, coastal defence and airports. They have won £60m worth of work and seem to have an incredibly busy 2024.

 

The Candidate:

  • You must have experience managing and working with design consultants and ideally have spent time working for a consultant.
  • You will be a chartered engineer or near chartered and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
  • The role requires design management for both regional civils and national energy projects.
  • Clean UK Driving license
  • Experience of working for large civil engineering contractors previously

Job Purpose:

  • Deliver sustainable, profitable growth by minimising risks, maximising opportunities and avoiding disputes across projects.
  • Manage both commercial and contractual aspects of a project(s), supporting the project team to deliver the project successfully.
  • Mentor graduate and trainee commercial staff within your division to support their development.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide information to assist in developing the divisional budget as required.
  • Take responsibility for delivering forecasted profits and margins.
  • Deliver consistent value and cost reporting.
  • Establish a robust and consistent change control process to ensure that appropriate contract price
  • Adjustments are identified and agreed upon with the customer.
  • Manage commercial activities with the operational team to achieve delivery and growth.
  • Ensure contractual duties, obligations, notices, standards etc. are observed and discharged to protect our position and entitlement under the Contract.
  • Ensure commercial activity is consistent and in line with company procedures.
  • When required support work winning teams in identifying and quantifying risk and opportunity in tenders and bids.
  • Support key negotiations with prospective customers, partners and subcontractors.
  • Effective cash management supported by regular liaison with our Accounts department.

Site Manager – Solar/Civils

Are you an experienced Site Manager with a Solar / Civils background looking for a new opportunity,

Sphere is currently working with a Renewable Energy Client seeking an experienced Site Manager to oversee a 26-week Solar Farm project based near North Tawton.

As the Site Manager, you will organise and oversee works carried out on site ensuring it is completed on time and within budget.

This is a permanent opportunity, once the initial project is complete, sites will be based nationally and will require national travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaising with clients and reporting on progress to site staff
  • Supervising and hiring site staff and subcontractors
  • Monitoring build costs and project progress
  • Conducting quality and safety inspections
  • Checking and preparing site reports, designs and drawings
  • Maintaining quality control checks
  • Give toolbox talks.

Key requirements:

  • Must have previous Solar and Civils experience.
  • Willing to travel to other sites on completion of the project
  • SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid

Nationwide Travel will be required after the initial site is completed.

Senior Quantity Surveyor – Civils and Solar

I am currently working with a renewable energy construction company to recruit a Senior Quantity Surveyor with a strong Civils background on a Permanent basis.

Reporting directly to the office near Exeter with some nationwide travel, overseeing general civil engineering projects.

This position would suit a Senior Quantity Surveyor looking to take the next move into Commercial Management

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the site is running to budget with regular liaison with the procurement and commercial team.
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for civil engineering projects, including materials, labour, and equipment.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to develop cost-effective project plans.
  • Monitor project budgets and financial performance, identifying cost-saving opportunities and potential risks.
  • Negotiate contracts, change orders, and variations.
  • Cost analysis and value engineering
  • Site measurements, valuations and final accounts

Key Requirements:

  • Previous Solar Farm/Renewable Energy/Civil Engineering knowledge and experience
  • Must have a strong Contract Management background with SMSTS, CSCS and FAW
  • Contractual knowledge and understanding
  • Proficient use of MS 365 and project planning software
  • Nationwide travel is required

Travel is essential for this position, with expenses paid for accommodation / food.
