Overview

Sphere Solutions are seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor, ideally from a civils or groundworks background, to join a highly successful subcontractor based in Mid Cornwall, with a strong presence across Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset.

Working with a number of leading housing developers and contractors, this business benefits from long-standing client relationships and a consistently busy portfolio of regional projects.


Key Responsibilities

  • Produce valuation matrices and daywork schedules
  • Review contract documentation and drawings to ensure accuracy and alignment across all parties
  • Prepare and submit monthly applications for payment in line with client calculation schedules
  • Verify and approve subcontractor payments
  • Maintain full visibility and control of all project costs and expenditure
  • Manage cost changes arising from revised drawings and design updates
  • Liaise with clients to agree dayworks prior to instruction
  • Ensure all works comply with company procedures and industry standards, supporting ISO, SMAS, CHAS, and Achilles accreditations

Requirements & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within construction
  • Strong background in groundworks or civil engineering (preferred)
  • Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying or similar (desirable)
  • Excellent commercial awareness and contractual understanding
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

Plant Machinery & Workshop Mechanic

Location: Redruth

About the Role

We are working with a market-leading Civil Engineering & Groundworks contractor to recruit a skilled Plant Machinery & Workshop Mechanic to join their Plant & Machinery department.

Suitable candidates will have a strong background in mechanical repairs and maintenance, with the ability to diagnose issues and carry out repairs on a wide range of machinery and vehicles.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough inspections of machinery and vehicles, including heavy plant and fleet vehicles
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, brake checks, and tyre rotations
  • Diagnose mechanical problems using diagnostic tools and equipment
  • Repair or replace faulty components (engines, transmissions, electrical systems, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and parts used
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and maintain a clean working environment
  • Collaborate with team members to improve processes and resolve technical challenges

Requirements & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Mechanic (minimum 2 years) or in a similar role
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and components
  • Experience using diagnostic tools and equipment
  • Relevant qualifications in automotive technology or mechanical engineering (advantageous)
  • Full UK driving licence

Mobile Plant Fitter

Location: Exeter & North Devon
Salary: From £20 per hour
Contract Type: Permanent | Full-Time
Hours: 45 hours per week (Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm)


About the Role

Sphere Solutions are working with one of the region’s leading Groundworks & Civils subcontractors to recruit a Mobile Plant Fitter.

You will work closely with the workshop team to ensure the fleet of vehicles and plant equipment remains fully maintained and operational across the Exeter and North Devon region.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on mobile plant equipment
  • Diagnose mechanical issues and troubleshoot faults effectively
  • Coordinate repair schedules with the team to minimise downtime
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work and parts used
  • Adhere to all health & safety regulations and best practices on-site
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior or less experienced staff

Working Hours

  • Monday to Friday
  • 8:00am – 5:00pm (45-hour week)

Salary: Up to £65,000 DOE

We are working with a well-established contractor who is seeking an experienced Estimator to join their team, specialising in groundworks projects across the South West.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated professional with a proven background in estimating within the construction and/or civil engineering sector.


Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing accurate cost estimates for groundworks and civil engineering projects
  • Analysing drawings, specifications, and project requirements
  • Liaising with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure competitive and accurate tenders
  • Supporting the commercial and operations teams throughout the project lifecycle
  • Identifying risks, opportunities, and value engineering options

Requirements

  • Proven experience as an Estimator
    • Experience within groundworks, civil engineering, or development would be advantageous
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes, materials, and industry regulations
  • Excellent IT skills, with proficiency in estimating software and MS Office / COINS
  • Ability to manage multiple tenders and work to deadlines
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
