About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Contracts Manager with residential groundworks and/or civil engineering experience to join a successful, long-standing regional subcontractor. You will manage residential sites across Dorset, North Somerset & Bristol.

Reporting directly to the Construction Director, you will take full responsibility for the successful delivery of multiple sites.


Key Responsibilities

  • Overall management of designated sites, ensuring health & safety compliance at all times
  • Manage site teams, direct labour, and subcontractors
  • Ensure all plant and materials are fit for purpose
  • Ensure PPE and on-site HSE requirements are in place
  • Implement short- and long-term programmes to deliver sites on time
  • Liaise with internal and external Health & Safety consultants, advisors, and auditors
  • Regular client liaison, progress updates, and attendance at meetings
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget
  • Work closely with commercial and technical teams
  • Source and recruit site teams and labour
  • Oversee ongoing training and HR matters

Requirements

  • Proven experience at Contracts Manager level within residential groundworks
  • Strong knowledge of programming and planning
  • Excellent health & safety management knowledge, including RAMS and COSHH
  • SMSTS qualification (essential)
  • Strong commercial and financial understanding
  • Full UK driving licence (sites across Bristol, Dorset & North Somerset)

Package

  • Salary in the region of £80,000–£90,000, dependent on experience

Sphere Solutions are partnering with a highly successful and well-established civils and groundworks subcontractor to recruit a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team, based in Bristol.

With an expansion phase in full swing and a large client base of repeat business, this is an excellent time to join the business and enhance your career.

This is a senior commercial role, offering responsibility for overseeing multiple residential and commercial projects, providing commercial leadership, and acting as a key interface between clients, site teams, and the wider supply chain.


Responsibilities

  • Leading the preparation and management of valuations, applications for payment, and final accounts
  • Producing and overseeing valuation matrices, dayworks schedules, and cost reporting
  • Full commercial ownership of project spend, forecasts, and cost value reconciliations
  • Reviewing contract documentation and drawings, ensuring commercial risks and changes are managed effectively
  • Managing cost variations arising from design changes and revised information
  • Verifying and approving subcontractor payments
  • Liaising with clients to agree dayworks, variations, and commercial matters
  • Supporting and mentoring junior commercial staff where required
  • Ensuring all commercial processes align with ISO, SMAS, CHAS, and Achilles accreditations

About You

  • Proven experience operating as a Senior Quantity Surveyor within groundworks and/or civil engineering
  • Confident managing multiple projects and senior client relationships
  • Excellent commercial awareness and contractual knowledge
  • Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline (preferred)

Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Sphere Solutions is working with a well-respected groundworks & civil engineering subcontractor specialising in residential new build. They are looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their busy commercial team in Bristol.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their QS career, or with 1–3 years’ experience, to gain exposure to project costs, valuations, and subcontractor management across a variety of regional projects.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the commercial team with preparing valuations, daywork schedules, and monthly applications for payment
  • Support monitoring of project costs and track expenditure accurately
  • Review contracts, drawings, and design changes under the guidance of senior QS staff
  • Help verify subcontractor payments and support the management of variations and final accounts
  • Liaise with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to gather cost information and resolve queries
  • Ensure compliance with ISO, SMAS, CHAS, and Achilles standards
  • Maintain commercial records, reports, and documentation to support the senior QS team

About You

  • Some experience in a Quantity Surveying role, ideally within groundworks, civil engineering, or housebuilding
  • Educated to degree or HND level in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or related discipline (preferred but not essential)
  • Good understanding of cost control, contract administration, and commercial processes
  • Strong communication and team-working skills
  • Motivated to develop a career in construction commercial management and keen to learn
